Welcome to Dave’s Taxis | Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Southampton

An Independent Taxi Driver based in Southampton, Hampshire

My name is Dave (hence the name Dave’s Taxis). I have worked as a private hire taxi driver for 17 years at the same company before buying my own taxi and branching out on my own. I’ve purchased a brand new vehicle to give customers a comfortable and pleasant journey.

I pride myself on offering a professional and friendly service where I go above and beyond for my customers. My taxi has been custom built by Gowrings Versa Mobility to be a wheelchair accessibility taxi.

Wheelchair Taxi Service FAQs

A wheelchair-friendly taxi service is a specialised transport service designed specifically to cater to the needs of individuals who use wheelchairs. Unlike regular taxis, which might not be equipped or suitable for all wheelchairs, wheelchair-friendly taxi services offer vehicles with the following adaptations:

  • Ramps or lifts: These allow for safe and easy entry and exit of the wheelchair user from the vehicle.
  • Securement features: These secure the wheelchair in place during the journey, ensuring the safety of the passenger.
  • Wider doorways and lowered floors: These facilitate easier access and manoeuvring of the wheelchair within the vehicle.
  • Trained drivers: Drivers are often trained in assisting passengers with transferring to and from the wheelchair and ensuring their comfort during the ride.

It’s important to remember that not all taxis are created equal. While some regular taxis might be able to accommodate a folded wheelchair in the trunk, they may not have the necessary features for safe and comfortable transportation of the passenger in the wheelchair.

Therefore, choosing a wheelchair-friendly taxi service guarantees a vehicle specifically adapted to meet your needs, offering:

  • Accessibility: Ensures a smooth and safe experience for wheelchair users.
  • Comfort: Provides features like wider space and securement for a comfortable journey.
  • Peace of mind: Guarantees professional drivers trained in assisting wheelchair users.

Individuals with physical disabilities:

  • Permanent disabilities: Conditions like spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and others can lead to long-term or permanent mobility impairments requiring the use of a wheelchair.
  • Temporary disabilities: Injuries, surgeries, or illnesses can cause temporary difficulty in walking, necessitating a wheelchair for a period of recovery.

Older adults: Age-related conditions like arthritis, decreased balance, or general frailty may lead older adults to use wheelchairs to maintain their mobility and independence.

People managing chronic conditions: Individuals with conditions like heart disease, chronic pain, or respiratory issues might find using a wheelchair helps conserve energy and reduce fatigue in their daily lives.

Specific situations and needs:

  • Hospital patients: Patients may need wheelchairs for transportation within hospitals, to or from appointments, or during the recovery process.
  • School runs: Children with disabilities or injuries might use wheelchairs to safely get to and from school.
  • Care home visits/day trips: Wheelchair use allows residents of care homes to participate in outings and maintain social connections.
  • Workplace accessibility: Workplaces that are wheelchair-accessible enable individuals with disabilities to successfully participate in the workforce.

Important Note: It’s essential to remember that wheelchair users are a diverse group with varying needs and abilities. Wheelchairs provide a means of mobility, independence, and participation in all aspects of life.

Daves Taxi – Now fitted with a Clear Protector Screen

To ensure your safety and peace of mind, I have now fitted my taxi with a clear protector screen. After every passenger ride, I personally clean the seats, handles, seatbelts etc using anti-bacterial cleaning equipment (wipes and sprays). Anti-bacterial hand gel is available for passengers and you’ll find this in the passenger seat door.

The clear screen ensures you and myself are kept safe, our contactless payments work through the screen and we are encouraging contactless card payments up to £45, if you need to pay by cash we ask this is left on the seat before you leave the taxi.
